The tornado at the Little Sioux Scout Ranch killed Scouts Josh Fennen, 13, Sam Thomsen, 13 and Ben Petrzilka, 14, all of Omaha, Nebraska; and Aaron Eilerts, 14, of Eagle Grove, Iowa, who was a Scout and camp staff member, said Gene Meyer, Iowa public safety commissioner. Injuries included forty-eight other scouts and adults.
Once the scout leaders saw the weather detoriate they sounded a siren and made everyone find shelter from the storm. Within a few moments the tornado was on top of them. The tornado took 8 seconds to pass. Once they looked around everything was gone or destroyed including a large number of trees in the area.
The ranch, which has four cabin shelters in addition to camping space, is about 45 miles north of Omaha and 45 miles south of Sioux City, Iowa
I can attest to the strong storms that have been rolling through the midwest, we have had a record number of tornados this year and we expecting another one in my area today. Remeber to be save when bad weather is approaching like having supplies and a good weather radio. My heart goes out to those 4 scouts that died as they were probably having a great time camping.
